"I just want a box with a hole," he said.
"But Matthew, you can't just bring a box with a hole...Let's decorate it to look FESTIVE!"
"No, Mom, I just want a box with a hole."
"But Matthew, I even bought these red plastic garbage cans you could use! You could just put a sign on it that says I won't be a grouch if you give me a Valentine. "
"Fine, you can put that sign....on my box with a hole."
"But Matthew, then it wouldn't even make sense..."
After a few minutes of dousing Matthew with my creative juices, we settled on.... a box with a hole. It is his box after all. And it was just the way he wanted it.
Luckily, I made my own Valentine mail box earlier this month. Every day we've been writing compliments to each other that we put it the mailbox. We raise the you've got mail flag then read them at the dinner table.
It makes me smile every time I look at my box and Matthew's box. They epitomize the difference between me and my boys. They'd rather use their creative juices to make the paper tanks that line the dinner table, next to my box. And you know what, that's just the way I like it.

LAUGHING! April I LOVE your boys. I love the way you appreciate them in all their boy-ness. Good stuff. (and I LOVE your mailbox too, very festive and cute)
I love this! Matthew cracks me up. :)
April!!! I had the SAME conversation with Ethan this year. He wanted to cover his in duck tape. I said, "Ethan, duck tape is so ugly." He said, "perfect"! Of course, he ended up with with a shiny silver box but he decorated it with underarmor signs. Boys...gotta love 'em!
Too Funny! My boys are luckily not there yet... but thanks for the warning. I'm sure it won't be too long.
I was chuckling about this all day after we talked on the phone. Such a cute kid.
April...Matthew is a riot! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that conversation!
BOTH the boxes are cute! I especially love those paper tankers. SO funny!.... looks just like an activity straight from the dinner table of a family of BOYS!!!
I laughed out loud! Cute boys. What a difference from my girls. We can't have enough hearts, sparkles, and ruffles over here.
Your family is beautiful! I can't believe how old they all are. What cuties.
What an adorable family you guys have. I found you on Evelyn's blog. I can't believe that your oldest is 10. What cuties!
Thanks for the laugh. It's a good thing those boys have you for a mom.
