Mitchell says...

* While we were on a walk Michell became quite worried, and when I asked him what was wrong, he said "Look, my shadow is dirty!"

* While we were sitting outside in the sunshine Mitchell said, "Oh dear, the sun is shining in my bare eyes!"

* As we walking through the library Mitchell took one arm out of his shirt. (That's what he does when he feels strong) Then he charged the halls with his bare arm forward calling, "I have the Power of God!"

* While yielding his trusty toy axe, Mitchell says in his bravest voice "I'm LASAGNA!" That word must sound very brave to him!

How can I not adore this boy?

Diapering for Daddys

Jimmy Piersel on how to diaper a baby (1968)... Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.

Happy Father's Day

Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to the wonderful fathers in my life. I love you

Mulberry miracles

I witness a miracle in my backyard every Spring and Summer. We have Robins that nest in each of our big Mulberry trees in the back yard. Every year I am so touched by what I see. The parents carefully work together to build a nest. They gather materials they feel will make their nest sturdy, cozy and safe for their precious eggs. They keep careful watch on that little nest, and when their eggs do hatch, they carefully guard their little babies. They use their bodies to bravely shelter them from rain and wind. I watch them pull up worms from my moist morning grass and take them to eager open mouths.
As the babies grow bigger, quite often one falls out of the nest before it is quite ready to fly. It touches me deeply to see how these parents continue to keep watch. These parents will hop after their little one and continue to put worms in it's little mouth. They teach it how to be more independent, but they are never too far away. They keep just enough distance so they won't attract attention to the little one, but they're always close to give aid when needed. These sweet little birds take such good care of their little one, yet when the time comes, they let go and let it fly. I have a feeling, though, that these parents aren't very far behind. I imagine they probably keep enough distance for their baby to feel independent and free, but truly never leave it alone.

Hope ya know...

Day at the museum

Mitchell loves the movie "Night at the Museum." He is especially intrigued by the "scary dinosaur bones." I told him that dinosaur bones really hold still, but he didn't believe me. So, we went to the Earth Science museum at BYU so he could see for himself. He was fascinated by the bones that didn't move, and he discovered they weren't scary at all! He felt very brave when he touched the sharp teeth, and he didn't want to leave. He keeps telling me "I just WUV dinosaur bones that hold still!"

Half birthday

Matthew’s birthday is during the Christmas-time cold
And he thinks Winter parties are just getting old
So he wanted to have some friends over for fun
to party together and play in the sun...
Since his half birthday was the very next day
he thought it would be a great day to play.
They played in the sun, had a water fight too.
They enjoyed doughnut halves and some other halves too!
We didn't do presents, it wasn't really his birthday
Just a fun chance to gather a few friends to play!

Bird Brains

I love having my boys home for the summer! I don't know if it's the teacher in me or what, but I love to teach my boys new things all summer long. This year I'm introducing them to bird watching. Bird watching? I know it might sound odd, but I took an appreciation of nature class in college and the entire focus was on birds. We had to identify a zillion birds in the wild in order to get a decent grade. At first I thought it was a ridiculous way to teach nature appreciation, but by the end I noticed I had developed the habit of watching for birds wherever I went. I have a fascination with these creatures because I had to be on the look-out for them. I realized that developing appreciation for something isn't necessarily curriculum related. It's learning to be watchful and aware.
Children are naturals at this. Whether they are looking up for birds, crouching down with the bugs, or feeling the breeze on their cheeks, they are so naturally aware of their surroundings.
In attempt to harvest this natural curiosity, I put together a bird bag with a field guide, some binoculars, a note book and some pencils so that we can become expert birders. We took our first field trip to the BYU botony pond in hopes of finding some interesting specimens. We enjoyed using our field guide and binoculars, and we wrote down our findings in our handy note book. I was proud of my boys for learning some new skills. As I watched them, though, they reminded me that being aware isn't necessarily subject related either. They enjoyed the birds, but they also enjoyed the mud, the water, the reeds, the bugs, the sounds, and each other.
As you can see, I didn't capture the boys faces on film, they were way to busy being aware to notice me- and that's just what I hoped for!

Have a watchful and wonderful Summer!

Turtle time

Just as we were about to leave the pond, we noticed the turtles!

“Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.”

BYU's newest hire

Matthew has been begging Dallan to take him to work with him, so this week he finally got the chance!

He packed his backpack full of snacks and activity books, and headed out into the work force!

He enjoyed hanging out in Dallan's office and he even got to meet Bronco Mendenhall! He lasted clear until lunch when I picked them up for a picnic at the botany pond!

Last day of school

We can't celebrate the last day of school without a picnic!
I just love getting my boys all to myself!
Selfish, I know!
Can you blame me?

Alien in a box

On the last day of school Josh brought his alien in a box for show and tell. He told his class the following:

Today I brought a space alien I captured in my back yard. As you can see I've been keeping it in this zarnium coated box and have been feeding it pure ammonia. And now the moment you've all been waiting for...... (as he pokes the alien out of the box...)YARRRR!

Song in the Night

I got the CD "Come Thou Fount" for my birthday, and this song is one of my favorites!
"This video portrays how Gods perfect love connects each of us, whether strangers or friends, and how his ever-watchful hand blesses us in our times of need." You'll love it!
